El Sereno’s MedSsupport Community Outreach – A Non Profit improving safety and effectiveness of your medications

Here’s a  first  in  the  rapidly-developing  field  of pharmacogenomics testing. MedSsupport Community Outreach, a non-profit arm of Portola Pharmacy, founded by Geneva Chen Pharm  D PhD in El Sereno announced that it would offer a free pharmacogenomics test to Medi-CAL patients suffering from depression  and  other  mental  health issues. This is a development that will catch the attention of psychiatrists and mental health professionals at other hospitals across North East Los Angeles.

If you have been diagnosed with depression and failed at least one medication, consider reaching out to MedSsupport Community Outreach. MedSsupport Community Outreach will acquire you a psychotropic pharmacogenomic test that analyzes clinically important genetic variations in your DNA. The results of the test can inform your doctors and pharmacists about genes that may impact how you metabolize or respond to certain medications and thus help identify medications and dosages that will be most effective and least toxic to you.

How Much Does It Cost? Free

Thanks to the generous donation by Dr.Diana Shu-Lian Chow, Ph.D., FNAI Paula & John J Lovoi Endowed Professor   in   Drug   Discovery and Development Professor of Pharmaceutics, Director, Institute for Drug Education and Research (IDER) University of Houston, College of Pharmacy. How is testing carried out – simple,

fast and efficient

First, our pharmacist conducts a comprehensive review on your current medications and medication history. The pharmacist will identify a certified genetic clinical laboratory and test panel specific for your psychiatric conditions. The pharmacist will then coordinate with you and the pharmacogenomics

What is the impact of the test-avoiding months of trial and error

Many patients who have been tested have been found to carry a genetic change that could affect medication selection or dosing. Test results are shared with your doctors and pharmacists through the electronic medical record to ensure efficiency and accuracy in choosing treatments. After receiving your report from the laboratory, our pharmacist will interpret and analyze the report to determine which gene variations will impact treatment outcomes. For patients starting out treatment on psychiatric disorder or in the process of changing medications, we can make science- based predictions on which medications will be most suitable for your condition, avoiding months of trial and error in a traditional treatment process.
